Our guest this week is Dr. Tom O'Bryan, a specialist in Celiac Disease and Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivities. He has been in the healthcare industry for more than 30 years and is the author of the book "The Autoimmune Fix". In this podcast, Tom tells us why he wrote the book and shares some freebies.

He will talk about his own personal experience at the age of 47 when he had an autoimmunity test. He had what he thought was perfect health and at the top of his game. He'll tell us what he found out and the changes he made to fix the problem.

We will talk also about antibodies and the importance of going for tests early to prevent elevated antibodies which eventually cause autoimmune diseases months or years later. Dr. Tom will explain to us what the Positive Predictive Value (PPV) test refers to, effects of toxins on women’s hormones, why women are more prone to autoimmune diseases, food sensitivities, testing options and the 3 biggest triggers to autoimmunity.

Dr. Tom O'Bryan's book is currently on pre-sale on Amazon until Sep 20, meaning that you'll get it 40% off. And for being a listener on Women's Wellness Radio, you'll get credit to buy nutritional formulas on his website. Simply send your receipt as proof of purchase to info@theDr.com.

Robyn SrigleyOur guest this week is Robyn Srigley, a holistic nutritionist and women’s holistic health coach. She works with women with hormonal dysfunctions.

Robyn studied at the Institute of Holistic Nutrition, and decided to change her diet. After some months she was constantly moody and this affected her relationships. During one lecture she learnt about the effects of the birth control pill and decided to stop using it. Her moodiness got worse, she missed her periods for 3-4 months at a time, and had acne breakouts. A year later she was diagnosed with PCOS.

During puberty, Robyn had a lot of acne on her face and in high school a doctor put her on accutane, a popular drug for people with deep painful acne. It worked and her acne went away but 6 months later it came back. She was put on antibiotics and lots of topical treatments and chemicals but none of them helped. She went back to using accutane, but six months later when she stopped using it the acne came back. She later learnt that the acne was connected to PCOS after she was diagnosed with the problem.

Through her journey with  PCOS, she decided to use her knowledge and experience to help other women going through similar problems.

In this episode Robyn talks about the hormones involved in PCOS and hormonal imbalances, the relationship between insulin levels with acne and PCOS, Chinese face mapping, symptoms of PCOS, product suggestions and her recommendations on how to balance hormones.

We put all of Robyn's information together in a handy sheet, print-able for you. You can get a copy by using the button below:

Kiran Krishnan

Kiran Krishnan is a Microbiologist and has over 20 years experience in the probiotics industry. He is trained in Microbiology and Biochemistry and worked in several companies developing health products. He left academic research and opened his own clinical research organization and now focuses on carrying out clinical research on the various nutritional products produced by different companies.

Kiran's journey on probiotics started about 12 years ago when he was hired by a large company to research on the probiotics market. He found out that most probiotic products in the market had been created based on presumptions from decades ago on what the microbiome was like.

In this episode we will talk about the microbiome and Kiran will introduce us to the term holobiome. We will talk about good and bad bacteria in the gut, how the body gets out of microbiome balance, diet as well as supplements. We will discuss in detail about a probiotic product he developed in his lab and talk about its possible side effects for patients with certain disorders like candida/yeast infection.

Megan WroeMegan Wroe is a registered dietitian based in California specializing in Pediatric care. She became a dietitian after her sister was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and later fell in love with pediatrics. She holds a Master of Science degree in Nutrition and Food Science from Cal Poly Pomona.

Megan talks about some of the common issues she sees with patients like:

  • Introducing infants to solid foods after 6 months
  • Obesity/ Overweight/ Underweight and failure to thrive
  • Food allergies and intolerances
  • Picky eating among kids (can be due to lack of knowledge or related to sensory disorders like autism)
  • Kids with GI issues like IBS, gluten intolerance, constipation, diarrhea and EOE
  • Hormonal issues among teenage girls like PCOS

Megan Wroe helps young parents who don't know what to feed their babies. She talks about her approach to the above kids' issues, the critical window for food/sensory development and the best time to introduce new foods.

"My philosophy with kids is first of all that it starts with the parents. I do a lot of division of responsibility, teaching parents that if they provide balanced meals and have consistent meal time routines, then their kids will follow suit."

We also discuss:

  1. How parents influence their kids' taste buds and choice of food
  2. How to introduce new food through food chaining and food play
  3. Involving kids in meal planning, grocery shopping and meal preparation
  4. The influence of birth method (whether C-section or vaginal birth) to kids' picky eating.
  5. The importance of teaching kids what not to eat especially if they have certain conditions or allergies. Remind them which foods can cause certain effects like stomach aches and allergies they experienced earlier.

Nanci Tunley was already trained in Pilates, nutrition and functional medicine, but she felt like something was still missing from her practice.  She found the missing link in transformation coaching.  She uses this tool to help women overcome their blocks to reach their health goals.

In this interview, we cover:

  • Something we can do right away to start to change
  • Important questions that you may have never asked yourself
  • A case study about weight loss

On the call I got to pin Nanci down and have her give the steps to transformation. Here's what she came up with:

  1. State what you want
  2. Step back
  3. Let go as needed
  4. Be able to say yes
  5. Choose your beliefs

Dr. Carrie Jones

You are in for a treat with this interview with Dr. Carrie Jones! Dr. Jones is a naturopathic physician who specializes in women's health.  She currently works as the full-time medical director for Precision Analytical, Inc, makers of the DUTCH test.

You have heard me sing the praises of the DUTCH test on a past episode with functional medical practitioner, Ann Melin. DUTCH stands for Dried Urine Test of Comprehensive Hormones.  I really like this test because it is a great way to measure adrenal function, female hormone status and detox capacity.

Dr. Jones has looked at many thousands of these tests, and she recaps the common patterns she sees on this episode. She also talks about why and when to take such a test.

Finally, she dishes on all her favorite herbs and supplements for female hormonal complaints.  We put this together in a handy sheet for you. You can get a copy by using the button below:

Cate Stillman

Our guest Cate Stillman of yogahealer.com explains how modern life tends to create imbalance. When we are disconnected from the Earth and its rhythms, or disconnected from our communities or our values, symptoms can develop.

Though she had studied advanced Ayurvedic principles and yoga, Cate observed that each of her students and clients needed some basic habits in place if they were to heal. Cate has worked with thousands of women and men to help them develop the ten habits needed to thrive.

She developed a book and program called Body Thrive, and we discuss two of the principles from the book here today.

I love these two practices because they are not commonly discussed or revered in our culture, and they are 'hidden gems' to create health.

Today we discuss the importance of:

  • Eating three meals a day without snacking to be in 'rest and digest' mode as often as possible (thus avoiding feeling frazzled)
  • Decluttering your space for a clear mind and less anxiety

This is a really fun conversation with both clear tips and strong foundational theory. Hope you enjoy it!

Here are a few resources we mention on the show:

Food sensitivities are sometimes called "the great mimicker," as they can present so many ways, from brain fog to skin rashes.

According to our guest Dr. Carri Drzyzga, the best way to find out what you are sensitive to is to do an elimination diet.

Two books we mention as great resources to do your own elimination diet are:

The Plan by Lyn-Genet Recitas

The Elimination Diet by Tom Malterre and Alissa Segersten

We also talk about the pros and cons of blood testing for food allergies and food sensitivities.  There are different labs to consider, and Dr. Carri's favorite is Cyrex labs, as they measure both the cooked and raw version of a food, not just the raw version. The test I like is by Oxford Biomedical, called the LEAP test.

Just to make things more confusing, there are also food intolerances, meaning foods that you don't digest well.  A common one you hear about is lactose (dairy protein) intolerance, which can actually be a sign of SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth.)

We also talk about:

  • Gluten and leaky gut
  • Stool testing for pathogens
  • Food rotation and allergy avoidance
  • Dr. Carri's favorite healing supplements

Dr. Carri Drzyzga is known internationally as ‘The Functional Medicine Doc’. She is committed to helping patients find the root cause of their health problems and fix the cause with natural treatments so they can feel normal again.

Her last name is pronounced ‘Driz’-ga’ (it’s Polish), but everyone calls her Dr. Carri.

She has been in private practice since 1996, and is founder of Functional Medicine Ontario in Ottawa, Ontario.

Dr. Carri holds two doctoral degrees—Chiropractic and Naturopathic Medicine. Additionally, she has training in Functional Medicine and The Kalish Method, and is a Certified Gluten Practitioner. Always an avid learner, Dr. Carri has obtained a level of expertise in her profession that no other doctor in Canada has achieved to date.

She is currently studying functional neurology.  If you'd like to learn more about functional neurology, check out our past episode with Dr. Peter Kan.

Connect with Dr. Carri at: www.FunctionalMedicineOntario.com.  She can see clients over Skype.  She also hosts a functional medicine podcast you can learn more about here.

To register for the webinar I mentioned on this episode, please go here.

It's happening Saturday 6/18/16 10 AM, PST 1 PM EST.

This webinar gives you a chance to learn about your cycle and ask questions.  It is also a preview to our upcoming Path to Perfect Periods program.  The deadline to join that program is 6/20/16 here.

Thanks!  Bridgit

Rachel Eyre is a young woman who is of the generation of women that may get their periods quite young due to environmental factors.  Rachel got her period at age 8 or 9, and they came on heavy and painful.  She proceeded to develop an array of troubling symptoms, including severe migraines, and was taking 40 medications at day by age 28.

Luckily for her and us, she turned to natural medicine and educated herself on the causes of women's health woes.  She is now a wealth of knowledge on the following topics:

  • What that weird menstrual color means
  • Why you might have clots
  • A reason behind menstrual headaches
  • A reason behind frequent urination
  • Alternatives to hormonal birth control
  • Uterine positioning and "dancing fallopian tubes"
  • The link between dioxin and endometriosis

She will also cover some cool solutions that you can do at home such as:

  • Yoni steams
  • Castor oil packs
  • Abdominal massage

Rachel taught me a LOT on this interview, and I think you'll learn a lot too!

Denie Hiestand is a natural health consultant, author, research expert, and former successful New Zealand dairy farmer. Denie has spent decades studying the skin and toxins/chemicals in everyday cosmetics and personal care products and identified a strong link between the high usage of chemical personal care products and the growing rates of cancers, infertility, hormone imbalances, allergies and various other modern day illnesses.

In response to his patient’s requests, Denie set about to create a completely pure and natural range of skincare products which not only contained none of the harmful additives found in the majority of commercial products, but equally importantly, contained life-giving, cell nourishing ingredients which feed and nourish the skin.

It took him eight years, many attempts and a big investment of his own money (including selling his wife's car out from under her!) to develop his skincare line, called The Cream.

Denie has a no-nonsense "New Zealand farm boy" style in his communication.  His passion to prevent women from using dangerous skin care products, and his passion to formulate alternative, effective products is evident in this interview.

Here are a few things he shared about conventional skincare:

  • Chemicals in skin cream are designed to enter through skin
  • This makes them the #1 source of toxin ingestion- absorbing up to 2.6 lbs a year
  • 99% of disease involves toxins
  • 90% of chemicals in use are used in cosmetics
  • One month on commercial skincare is worse 10 years of smoking
  • In reproductive women, toxins are stored in the fatty acid reserves, which the fetus lives off of in the 1st trimester
  • In menopausal women, storage is more in the organs such as the breast

Denie's skincare line is colostrum-based. Colostrum is produced in lactating mammals the first 72 hours after giving birth.

These days colostrum is being used more a health supplement.  Denie was already aware of the power of colostrum from his experience as a dairy farmer. Colostrum activates the cells, the immune system, and has "electric and zeta potential." It stimulates growth hormone.

Their colostrum is sourced from healthy, grass-fed, antibiotic-free New Zealand dairy cows. The cows produce a surplus, so collecting it is no detriment to their offspring.

Denie and his staff are extending a 20% discount plus free shipping to our listeners through June 30, 2016 with the code HEALTHYSKIN at check-out.  Shop and explore at TheCream.com.

My guests today are Audrey Sourroubille Arnold and Lucia Lukanova, both women's health coaches and also partners in a women's health app called The Flow.

A bit about the pair:

Audrey- Diagnosed with endometriosis  a few years ago.  She feels her former high pressure career contributed to her endometriosis diagnosis and overall burn-out. She switched careers into women's health.

Lucia- Working long hours doing big technology projects. She got burned out as well, and started to learn about hormones of stress and the menstrual cycle. She started to notice the subtle symptoms related to the phases of her cycle. She wanted an app to help her track her cycle, but didn’t find one, so she started to develop one, now out in several languages, called the Flow App.

Stages of the Cycle

Week One- Starts with day one of your cycle.   Cleanse time, from the inside out- want to be alone and peaceful.  Your verbal skills are lower, but is a 'wise stage.'  Energy is low and if you push you get cravings to create energy.

Paula Ratcliffe ran the Chicago marathon in world record time, and was on day 1 of her cycle.

In transition from period to the next stage (dynamic), is a good time to knock out your to-do list.

Week Two- Dynamic phase- energy is good, accomplish things, 'maiden' phase

Ovulation- femme fatale moment - phéromones are high, vocal chords have highest range, good time to ask for pay raise

Post-ovulation- a mini PMS is possible

Week Three- Reflexive phase- decide what to keep or give up, evaluate, very empathic, mother, femininity, caring, nurturing

Week Four- Creative phase, Enchantress, represents Autumn season

Some resources we mention on the show:

Audrey's website

Miranda Gray's website

Jason Karp's book, Running for Women: Your Complete Guide for a Lifetime of Running

Video on How to Use the Flow App

Ultimately you will have to download the Flow App from the app store on your smartphone, but you can find more info on the Flow App here.

Try the Flow App with a friend so you can discover it together!

Enjoying the show?  We'd really appreciate you taking a moment to rate and review us on iTunes.

Essential oils are really growing in popularity.  They are fun and easy to use, but there is a lot to learn!  Which ones are best for you?  How do you use them?  What about the quality?

We answer many of these questions with Dr. Mariza Snyder, an essential expert and women's health expert.

We also recorded a short video together to show off her favorite oils and we talked about using oils internally.  See the video here.

Lastly, I was inspired to create an eBook to organize all the juicy details Dr. Mariza was throwing down!  You can pick that up below.

Thanks for listening!

The birth control pill is an easy-to-use, affordable way to avoid pregnancy.  But are there any risks?

Many women do have symptoms, such as loss of sex drive or weight gain, but beyond that, most women don't know much about the health-related side effects.

In this interview, Andrea Thorpe, LAc opens the lid on the topic of the possible effects of long-term birth control use.  Many women are on birth control pills for 10-15 years, and the long-term effects are something to be considered:

  • Synthetic estrogen dysregulates the thyroid
  • Birth control pill casues nutrient depletion
  • Hormone receptor site have a downregulated response
  • Toxic burden on the system of long-term medication use
  • Toxic/ inflammed state and nutrient depletion affects the gut and immune system
  • Autoimmune disease Hashimoto's thyroiditis then becomes a possiblity
  • Ovulation and fertility are often delayed after birth control use

Andrea also covers some of the healing options such as:

  • How acupuncture benefits the system
  • Why Andrea prefers foods over supplements
  • When it's time to see a functional medicine practitioner

Andrea is an amazing practitioner, and if you can see her in the LA area, I highly recommend her.  Her clinic:  http://lotuscenter.com/

Apr 7, 2016

Andrea Beaman did not always eat so well.  Microwave dinners and toaster pizzas were on the menu.  Eventually she was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

Also her dear mom had breast cancer that had spread, and she was given not long to live.  In looking for solutions for her mom, she turned to whole foods and healthy mindset.

Two books that inspired her in those early days are:

Physician Heal Thyself by Hugh Faulkner

The Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton

Andrea later went on to be on the first season of Top Chef, after being encouraged by one of her cooking students.  Andrea did not own a TV, and had no idea what she was getting into, so it turned into quite an adventure!

Some of Andrea's many get quotes:

"Autoimmunity can be healed."

"Don’t wait till you’re in the grave to make a change."

"Cooking at home and feeding others is so valuable."

On pesticides..."the difference between the bug and us is size."

"This century is about thyroid.  50 years of women not eating fat, not getting minerals carried by fat got us here."

"I value the doctors. If I go outside and get hit by a bus, please take me to the doctor, don't take me to the health food store."

"Fad diets are always missing some food group."

Vegans- Get adrenal exhaustion

Paleo- Missing starches needed for microbiome, which backs up liver. Starches feed the mitochondria.

Nourishing Thyroid Health is Andrea's online educational program on the thyroid.  Learn about:

  • Preparing foods
  • How the endocrine system works
  • Environmental toxicants
  • How to heal the digestive system
  • How to heal the adrenals
  • The emotional and spiritual aspect of thyroid health

Includes:

  • Guest expert modules
  • Live coaching calls

Please check out the program here: https://tinyurl.com/thyroid123

Andrea's Top Five Take-aways:

  1. Eat clean- get toxins out
  2. Support your energetic body with exercise of some sort, inc. tai chi, yoga
  3. Destress- set boundaries
  4. Get some sun- get outdoors
  5. You’re worth it!

Before you jump into hormone replacement, or get hooked on mood-altering medications during your perimenopausal years, you need to hear out Maria Claps!

Maria is a health coach and functional medicine practitioner who entered full menopause before 50.  But before that, she had a rough ride in perimenopause.  After not sleeping for three full days, she broke down and saw a holistic medical doctor.  Though she got some relief, she didn't get the careful testing and holistic approach she would have liked.

She went on to become an expert on perimenopause, and now sees, primarily, women ages 45-50 who are complaining of fatigue, low libido, weight gain and low mood.

She developed her approach to hormone health, which she calls the 4 pillars.  These include liver care, adrenal support, blood sugar balancing, and hormone testing.

We talk especially about a test we both like, called the Dried Urine Test of Comprehensive Hormones.  This test can save you a lot of grief!

Listen in, and learn about Maria's approach.

For more on Maria, see:

We are pleased to have Evan Brand of Not Just Paleo on the podcast.  Evan is a great educator, and he embraces a 'no BS' approach to health care.

In college, he got sick and depressed, but learned about nutrition, omega 3 oils, vitamin D and more to improve his health.  He also dropped out of business school (where he wasn't happy) and went to work on park land.  This dedicated, full-time time in nature was very therapeutic for him.

Evan shares that plants emit compounds that benefit our immune system, and how communing with nature lowers and manages our stress.  He teaches about the neurotransmitters that shape our moods, how we self medicate with foods and drink, and how we can break those habits.  He also shares the testing method he uses to observe neurotransmitter activity.

There are lots of other great nuggets in here, such as how Facebook can affect our mood, and how we can get addicted to the rush of modern pleasures, at the expense of our natural mood regulation.

Dr Allan Warshowsky

I was honored to interview Dr. Allan Warshowsky, author of Healing Fibroids: A Doctor’s Guide to a Natural Cure.  Dr. Allan is a pioneer in progressive and integrative care for women's health, doing it long before it was popular, and out of frustration that he couldn't get results for his patients with conventional care.

With his wife Priscilla, he now runs a small wellness practice in Rye, NY, and sees clients from all over the world.

Dr. Allan tells us that 30-70% of women get fibroids, and he estimates that 80% of fibroid surgeries could be avoided.

His approach includes:

  • Reducing inflammation
  • Restoring hormone imbalance
  • Detoxification
  • Gut repair
  • Blood sugar balancing
  • Caster oil packs or poke oil packs
  • Creating connection to fibroids with massage, visualization
  • Moving into parasympathetic mode of nervous system with meditation, gratitude
  • Dry skin brushing
  • Breast massage
  • Clearing chakra issues
  • Elimination diet- including removing allergenic and GMO
